Illustrative landscape; not a photograph of a specific Wichita location.
Choose the Wichita Art Museum, Ulrich Museum or Advanced Learning Library for a free indoor outing. For time outside, start with the Keeper of the Plains, Central Riverside Park, Chisholm Creek Park or public art along Douglas Avenue. Splash pads are seasonal, while library passes can unlock selected paid attractions when available. “Free” refers to the main activity; parking, transportation, food and optional extras may still cost money.

See the Keeper of the Plains and Ring of Fire
The Keeper of the Plains is a free outdoor landmark at 339 Veterans Parkway. Its Ring of Fire is a 15-minute, manually operated evening display scheduled for 9 p.m. during daylight saving time and 7 p.m. during standard time.
The display is not guaranteed. High winds, rain, high river levels or conditions near the burners can prevent lighting. The fire burns around the sculpture’s base and plaza, not atop the Keeper. If the display is the main reason for going, review the official Keeper schedule shortly before leaving.
The city has announced 2026 access work near Central and Nims. Temporary pedestrian routes, periodic trail closures and construction use of some parking spaces may affect the approach. Follow posted detours and review the city’s access notice rather than assuming every usual route is open.
Visit the Wichita Art Museum for Free
The Wichita Art Museum offers free general admission at 1400 West Museum Boulevard. Some special exhibitions require a separate ticket, so visitors can tour the general galleries without paying and decide separately whether to add a ticketed exhibition.
The museum is not an early-week indoor option. The admission and hours page lists gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with Friday hours extended to 9 p.m. The galleries are closed Monday, Tuesday and major holidays.
Explore the Ulrich Museum and Wichita State Sculpture Collection
The Ulrich Museum of Art combines free indoor galleries with a year-round outdoor sculpture collection on the Wichita State University campus at 1845 Fairmount. The two parts follow different schedules.
The Ulrich hours and admission page lists gallery hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, plus 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. The indoor galleries are closed Sunday, Monday and university or major holidays.
The Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection is open seven days a week throughout the year. It provides an art option when the galleries are closed and the weather suits a campus walk. Review current campus parking instructions rather than assuming every parking area is free.
Spend an Indoor Afternoon at the Advanced Learning Library
The Advanced Learning Library at 711 West 2nd Street is a free indoor place to browse, read or spend time out of uncomfortable weather. It includes a dedicated Family Place space for children and caregivers, along with an outdoor STEAM Learning Garden.
The library’s location and hours page lists hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Holiday closures apply.
Free technology classes add another possible activity, but the events calendar and registration rules determine what is available on a particular day. Some equipment and materials have separate limits. Purchases from the cafe or bookstore are optional expenses, not part of the free library visit.
See Wildlife and Picnic at Central Riverside Park
Central Riverside Park combines a free wildlife exhibit with picnic tables, a playground, restrooms, parking, shaded trees and open lawn at 720 Nims. The park sits along the Little Arkansas River.
The Kansas Wildlife Exhibit is open daily without admission. A feeding program normally begins at noon, with the indoor exhibit opening afterward. Treat that indoor portion as a timed addition rather than an all-day indoor destination.
The exhibit features non-releasable wildlife ambassadors rather than a full zoo, and a particular animal may not be visible during every visit. Pairing the exhibit with a picnic, playground time or a park walk gives the outing more than one focus.
Walk the Trails at Chisholm Creek Park
Chisholm Creek Park offers free trails from dawn to dusk at 6232 East 29th Street North. Choose it for an outdoor walk and wildlife observation, not as an indoor weather backup.
The Great Plains Nature Center building was temporarily closed for construction as of October 2026, although the park trails remained open. Confirm the building’s current status through the center’s construction updates before planning around indoor access. Outdoor restrooms generally operate from mid-March through mid-October, so winter visitors should plan accordingly.
Pets are not permitted on Chisholm Creek Park trails because the park is managed as wildlife habitat. Choose a different outdoor stop when a pet needs to join the outing.
Find Public Art Along Douglas Avenue
Douglas Avenue offers a free, self-guided public-art walk without an admission gate or museum schedule. Georgia Gerber’s bronze animal and human figures appear along downtown sidewalks, so visitors can cover as many blocks as the weather and available time allow.
Gallery Alley adds another outdoor art stop just off Douglas Avenue, west of the overhead railroad tracks. There is no required route or fixed number of sculptures to complete.
Nearby restaurants, stores and scheduled entertainment are separate choices. The dependable free activity is viewing the outdoor art; purchases and ticketed events are optional additions.
Use Wichita Splash Pads During the Summer Season
Wichita splash pads provide water play without an admission fee during their operating season, generally from May through September. Individual locations may close temporarily for maintenance.
The 2026 splash-pad season ended September 27, and the pads were closed for the season as of October 2026. Use the city splash-pad page to find the next announced season, participating locations and current maintenance status. Pets are not permitted at splash pads.
City swimming pools are a separate category and ordinarily charge admission. A pool should not be treated as a free substitute when a splash pad is closed.
Borrow a Library Pass for a Normally Paid Attraction
A Wichita Public Library Experience Pass can cover included admission to a selected paid attraction, but the plan depends on finding an eligible pass. Examples include family packs for Botanica and Exploration Place. Neither attraction is automatically free without a valid pass or another admission offer.
Experience Passes are first come, first served and cannot be placed on hold. The loan lasts seven days and cannot be renewed. The borrower must have an eligible library account that can check out physical materials; an e-card cannot be used for physical checkout. Ask the library whether the account and card type you plan to use are eligible.
Each attraction sets how many people its pass covers. Special exhibitions, add-ons, concessions and gift-shop purchases may still cost money. Confirm current pass availability and attraction-specific terms before promising the outing to anyone in the group.
Choose an Indoor or Outdoor Plan for Your Day
Choose the day’s outing by matching the weather and weekday to a place that will be open.
- Hot or rainy Monday: The Advanced Learning Library is the clearest indoor choice among these destinations. The Wichita Art Museum is closed Monday and Tuesday, while the Ulrich’s indoor galleries are closed Sunday and Monday.
- Outdoor art without gallery hours: Walk through the Ulrich’s year-round sculpture collection when its galleries are closed.
- Trail day: Pick Chisholm Creek Park when a dawn-to-dusk walk suits the weather and no pet needs to come along. Do not rely on the nature center building as an indoor alternative without confirming that it has reopened.
- Evening landmark visit: Go to the Keeper plaza, but keep another plan in mind if the Ring of Fire cannot run because of weather or river conditions.
For an outing that may include paid stops, these Wichita date-night ideas provide more possibilities. Not every option in that guide is free.
Get to Know More of Wichita
A free outing can also provide an easy introduction to Wichita when you focus on one part of the city at a time. Start with downtown art, the riverfront, the Wichita State campus or a park, depending on the kind of day you want.
For more geographic context, this guide to Wichita neighborhoods and areas explains how different parts of the city fit together. Use it as background for exploring rather than turning one outing into a citywide checklist. Choose the destination first, then confirm the one detail most likely to change the plan: opening hours, weather, seasonal status or pass availability.
